Linux for ps3

Its time to give linux another go. Can anyone advise me what is the most up to date download. A young lad told me there are things i can do on a ps3 with linux that i can't do on my laptop. Can anyone enlighten on what he might be talking about. thanks for replies chappies.

Have you updated the PS3 firmware since April 1st this year
That update removed the option to install "other OS"
and as far as i am aware there is no way to roll back to a previous firmware

I didn't install the update, sony gave me the option of online gaming or other os ( nice of them) so for me its other os. I'm thinking of getting the slim for online gaming.
