when you run PS3 Media server on your PC ot is the PC that transcodes the video on the fly to a format the Ps3 can play so there is no need to convert any video files.
MKv and HD files will need to buffer for a few minutes first (I left mine paused via the PS3 but still transcodingfor about 10 minutes before playing the file.
HD files will not play over a wireless network very well if al all so i had mine hard wired to my network.
Look on the PS media server forums to find the optimal settings.
you will need a fairly powerful PC to convert files on the fly though

ok your best bet then is to download bluray movies in mkv format.

then use a program mkv2vob (just google it youll find it) is free and easy to use

only takes around 10 mins to convert the movie into a vob file that the ps3 can read easily with no loss of quality.

simply tell the program where your file is then itll convert it for you

                    simples

                      really simple

i have found that orb suits for all media access and streaming (very light app) so if your running an old shabby system then just use it to host the media let th ps3 decode (you would be surprised the video formats you can play)

if using a wireless conection use pcmcia(laptop) pcie(desktop) wireles n+ minimum and hardwire ps3 to switch or router if you dont hav the hardware then hardwire them using cat5e otherwise you will be waiting ages for it to stream and unfortunately the latest firm updates choke you streaming cach

Try a networked Western Digital My World NAS harddrive. Has Twonky media server built in, put .mkv through mkv2vob and off you go, works for me.
