Unhackable PS3 finally jailbroken, video claims

An Australian seller of videogame modchips claims Sony's PlayStation 3 console has been jailbroken by a hack that allows users to run backup and home-brewed copies of games ? not to mention titles that have been pirated.

OzModChips.com posted three videos on YouTube that purport to show a fully current version of the console that is broken using a simple USB dongle. In the video below, the narrator puts a disc copy of God of War III into the PS3's drive and then activates the console's backup manager. He then appears to scroll through a list of games before selecting and running the title Infamous. The videos have been greeted by claims the hack is an elaborate hoax, so the video shows both the TV and the console in full view throughout the demo.

Also with Team jungle (the team behind xbox 360 drive hacks and firmware) working with Team Hades on the PS3 BD Drive, could be finally hacked and cracked.

Time will tell us all tho.

you will not be able to just download games.
              From what i understand
              The PS3
              USB Dongle
              USB HDD
              will all be "signed" Together
Programmes will not work on a PS3 unless you have the same HDD Dongle & PS3 that you backed up your games on.

A sort of copy protection for bypassing Copyright protection.

Plus i can see SONY releasing a FW update very soon to disable the dongle.

Word on the street is that the "engineers dongle" was shipped back to a costumer who's unit was in for repair(inserted in the usb slot),then a bit of reverse enginneering was done to produce the jailbreak.also could have been leaked by an employee......who cares once its out there and working.Interesting vid on it[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofkW5VCJ2ic"] here[/ame]
Only supports FAT32 at the mo but its a start.

Nope, there is no copy protection that you speak of.
The dongle is infact a JIG which is used by sony themselves when fixing ps3's, the dongle puts the ps3 into DEV mode, so that you can do stuff normally restricted to developers. This means you can run unsigned code such as the loader, which then runs the games.
The only issue which has risen, is that an external drive needs to be formatted in FAT32, and as a filesystem this only accepts files which are less than 4GB in size.
There are a few games which have files larger than 4GB, such as FIFA 10, NHL 10 and UFC 2010, which all have important files which are bigger than 4GB.

However, the internal harddrive is not FAT32, and instead is formatted to a mordern bespoke format, which does accept large files, and such any backups on the internal hard drive of the above games is confirmed to work fine.

there seling for on ebay for 90? ,i think best thing about is ....even tho games cant be burnt yet you can still rent games rip them to your HD return the game and continue to play with the dongle , only downfall to this is your restricted to HD space

but surely someone should be able to extract the files off the usb drive and upload it to the net ...i look forward to the happy uploaded that manages to do this im sure the scene are eager to get there hands on it
