Im not sure what format the blu ray wil be in but with avi's i stored some on an external drive and from there installed them on the ps3 hard drive.
Im on 3.41 so im not sure if the newer updates would make you unable to store it on the ps3.
Thank Me If I Help You

Do you not need a blu ray converter, i have a external hdd but never thought it was as straight forward as you say. I'm a happy chappy if it is as you say. Thanks for reply.

I think you would be better off downloading MKV blu-ray rips then using something like mkv2vob to convert the mkv into something the ps3 can play because some of those blu-rays are huge Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street comes in at 42.47 GB on blu-ray but a very nice 1080p mkv rip rolls in at 12GB or a 720p rip can be as low as 4.37GB

you just need ps3 media server this will stream all video files directley to the ps3 and allow you to watch them on the tv, for mkv files (hd video) you need a ethernet connection as the bit rate is too much for a wireless connection
