I don't know re the jail breaking, but when I swapped my HDD in the PS3, it lost its firmware/ wouldn't start and I had to install a new firmware off USB with sony's built in recovery console.

Basically wait till after you've swapped the HDD, but download the 3.41 firmware, someone will know which site have it at the mo, and put it on a USB in the root directory in case it goes tits.

Worth noting that for some of us when the ps3 re-boots during the re install it loses connection with the external hdd, then gives an error that there is no backup data, to fix this when it re-boots switch off power to ext hdd, then when ps3 asks you to press the ps button - don't - then power up the ext hdd - wait 10 seconds - then press ps to finish the backup

Thanks for the advice, but Im scared in case it all goes Pete Tong. Maybe just get a Ext HD. Is it formatted to FAT32 as if it is, I can use it for work also.
