Any one that can be updated will so the same job, new payloads are coming out with new features & fixes so you need to be able to change payloads, personally I use a minimus 32 avr cost ?25, it works fine and has a larger size flash than most, but for current payloads a smaller flash is fine

Minimus or maximus boards. Or the PIC boards, all are updateable. You can get the actual proper dongles from China for under ?10 now.

I have an unbranded one from Thailand, it lights up BLUE when plugged in.. (its tiny)..

Most games will play without a disc in, also you can play download ps3 games, ftp them to the ps3 and play them. You could also rent or borrow games and copy them to the ps3's hdd and play them. All only possible if your console is on old firmware

Depending on the hex loaded to the dongle, then yes you can play without the original disc in the drive.
