I find that most times just pressing the circle button will cancel the update request and the game will load without updating or just go into the ps3s settings and disable the internet connection when you want to play games

Update your dongle so that it spoofs 3.5 when it boots.

3.50 spoofing only worked for psn (for about a week!!!)not games and even then It still shows as a dev unit on the network, so it?s not even masking anything from Sony.
3.50 games wont boot because your not running 3.50 if a game was compiled with the 3.42 Sony SDK it will work, but if the game is compiled using 3.50 SDK it wont work
What Mjolinor said about updating your dongle probably is the the correct answer put Hermes v4b on your dongle and Gaia Manager v1.03.1 and or Open Manager v1.17.1 on your ps3 you should be able to update your games with no problems... It works for me.
