I have the same drive and recommended it to you mate,

All I done was plug the drive in. connected a ps3 wireless controller via a usb port with cable and formatted the new drive, restarted ps3 no problems at all

so after you connected the ps3 controller have you formatted the new drive royston?

Is this the error youre getting royston

The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try to restart the system.
If the system cannot be restarted, the system partition of the hard disk must be reformated and you must install the system software. Insert storage media that contains update data of version 2.30 or later, and then press the START and SELECT buttons at the same time.
For information on how to obtain update data, refer to the SCE web site for your region

I wouldn't install 3.55 mate, what firmware were you on previously? if you want to hack your ps3 you want to install 3.41 firmware.

There's a webpage that has all the firmware listed on , (sorry I can't find it at the moment) but you need to download the 3.41 update (don't download any higher version if you want to hack PS3)

If you can't find it let me know , I have it somewhere on my pc upstairs and will upload it for you. 3.41 (2nd release) fixed an issue with new HDDs

ok m8 if your using 3.55 download that

on the root of your usb stick create a folder called PS3 (must be in caps) in that folder create another folder called UPDATE (again caps) then place the PS3UPDATE.PUP file that you downloaded in the UPDATE folder

so on your flash drive you should have PS3> UPDATE> PS3UPDATE.PUP

plug in your dongle to ps3

                            turn on ps3

it should come up saying something like ps3 cannot start or something but if you read it it should say press START and SELECT together, so do that then itll search for firmware on dongle, once found it will then begin to format then just follow the onscreen instructions
