    PlayStation 3 code signing cracked

Hardware hackers claim to have uncovered the private key used by Sony to authorise code to run on PlayStation 3 systems.

The hackers uncovered the hack in order to run Linux or PS3 consoles, irrespective on the version of firmware the games console was running. By knowing the private key used by Sony the hackers are able to sign code so that a console can boot directly into Linux. Previous approaches to running the open source OS on a games console were firmware specific and involved messing around with USB sticks.

The same code signing technique might also be used to run pirated or counterfeit games on a console. That isn't the intention of the hackers even though it might turn out to be the main practical effect of the hack.

Hacker George Hotz, also known as GeoHot, has posted what he claims to be the PlayStation 3 root key, which is used for code signing games. GeoHot, who is known for helping crack the iPhone, has not only found the key, which groups have claimed in the past, but he has posted it to the public.
The root key lets the PS3 know that a piece of software is legitimate. If other hackers start using it (and it is indeed the real one), the key will let them make custom software or easily use pirated games. It will make it possible to run homebrew without the need for psjailbreak-style USB-devices. It also provides hope for those at firmware version 3.55 that have no way of downgrading.

The key cannot be changed without hardware modifications (firmware updates are not enough), and even doing so would render current software inoperable. In short, Sony will have a hard time fighting hacks developed with this key. The company has yet to issue a statement regarding the news; there are likely quite a number of people currently working overtime to figure out the implications of the key being available for the world to see.

seen this and also the key

but dont know if its ok to post it

it means you can write your own software for the PS3 sign it with the key and thus it will run the PS3 as the PS3 will see it as a legit peice of software.

                    so at a stroke,

the worlds most secure console , has just become the worlds most insecure console...

i know nothin about programming, but why have such a code in the first place?

or do they need these things to make the consoles work?
