How to Jailbreak PlayStation 3 Firmware 3.55, And Install Custom Packages [Guide]
    By Taimur Asad | January 9th, 2011

How to Jailbreak PS3 on v3.55 Firmware:

    1. Plug a USB stick into your computer
    2. Create a folder in the root of the USB stick called PS3
    3. Create a folder inside the PS3 folder called UPDATE
    4. Download
    Code:
    [B][url]http://geohot.com/jailbreak.zip[/url][/B]
    5. Unzip Jailbreak.zip to PS3UPDAT.PUP
    6. Move PS3UPDAT.PUP to the directory UPDATE that you just created on the USB stick
    7. Plug the USB stick into your PS3
    8. Navigate to Settings Tab
    9. Choose System Update
    10. Choose Update via Storage Media
    11. It will say it found Version 3.55-jb
    12. Choose OK
    13. Accept Conditions and Install Update
    14. After less than a minute, your PS3 will update, beep 4 times then shut down.
    15. Power up your PS3 (You will have to do it on the console and not by the controller)
    16. Your PS3 is now jailbroken!

How to Install Custom Packages on PS3 v3.55 Firmware:
    1. Plug your USB stick into your computer
    2. Drop http://geohot.com/test.pkg into the root of the USB stick
    3. Plug your USB stick into your PS3
    4. Navigate to the Game Tab
    5. Choose Install Package Files
    6. Select the test.pkg
    7. After it installs you will find the test package from geohot installed below the Install Package Files folder
    8. Wait for more packages to be created by the PS3 community

Thanks to StealthBravo for the instructions !

          Thanks for this thread...

I've been following the developments of the PS3 jailbrake from a distance but now this method seems to good to be true!

Couple of questions if anyone would be kind enough to respond.

I take it I need to update officially then use the above update through a usb stick?

After doing the second part of the tutorial, is it just a matter of waiting for the appropriate tools to be released to run back-ups?

And, are those back-ups to be put on the PS3's hard drive to play?

          Thanks...

I think it should be said that apart from a very few games that are a pain to get working via modifying/rebuilding eboots (To much like hard work!!) or support direct boot inside of mutiman backup manager and the like this firmware will not play backups,This is because syscalls haven't been enabled. It only really allows you to install homebrew..Linux,snes/sega emulators,FTP,etc

If your on 3.41 DO NOT upgrade to this firmware if you want to continue to play backups wait until there is a backup friendly custom firmware (one with peek and poke syscalls enabled).

If you have already updated to 3.55 you can now downgrade PSGroove.com - Successful 3.55 to 3.41 Downgrade Method Released if you have a old skool phat but there may be a price (loss of blu-ray movie playback)..Do not try to downgrade a slim (yet) it will brick it!!

Here's how to install there hack.

Many link to software in here and instructions on how to, this is fast developing and can change all the time. Confirmed online working and no problems on Fat 80g

To play games, or back them up from a disk You'll need this installing too:
Gaia Manager v2.01 - PSX PS2 PS3 Scene Modchip, Jailbreak & CFW Community

(You wont need the lvl2.pkg thing if you use that backup manager, its got it built in)

Basically, you make sure your on the latest Firmware (3.55 only)

Then you boot the machine into Recovery mode.
(Power off... hold the powerbutton down. It'll bleep a few times then power off
Press the powerbutton and hold it again, but this time let go after the 2 bleeps)

When in recovery mode, you load the Modified firmware off a USB stick (put the PSUPDAT.PUP into a PS3/UPDATE folder on the USB stick.

it'll load it up, reboot and once your back into the PS3 game screen, there'll be 2 new options under GAME. Use the Install Package to install the Backup manager I linked before.

With that backup manager, you can backup game disks (or download them if you know hoe off the internet). And then load any game you pick later.

You can use External USB hard drives to keep the games on, but some do need to be ripped to the internal HDD. Not all, just a few.

www.psjcl.com is the site that lists what games work and where.

yes get the official sony firmware and start up in recovery mode as follows

Copy OFW file to /PS3/UPDATE/ folder on your USB drive. Take note of the path folder.
                        Power down the PS3.
Now press and hold the power button, the system will startup and shutdown again.
Release the power button, then press & hold power again, you?ll hear one beep followed by two consecutive beeps.
Release power then follow the on-screen instructions. You?re now in the recovery menu.
Connect the USB device and select ?System Update.?

Yes you need to upgrade the 3.55 OFW from Sony before jailbreak
