APPLICABLE TO 3.55 FIRMWARE ONLY! as soon as 3.56+ CFW hits i'll update
Want to play backups without costing you a penny?
The only hardware you'll need is access to a computer, a thumbdrive and an internet connection.
I've rared absolutely everything you'll need to get up and running and uploaded it to the downloads section.
EDIT: its here http://www.MegaShare.com/2954661 apparently 200odd mb is too big for the downloads section, multiparting it seemed absurd.
Once you've obtained the ps3.rar you'll need to unrar it somewhere (C:\ would be ideal if your clueless about dos, otherwise anywhere is fine)
1:
In the tools folder theres a file called "ftweak-hash.exe" Install it, it puts a new tab in your menu when you right click a file and select properties called HASH/CRC and is essential to let you know if things went right. If you already have a way of checking MD5 hashes you can clearly skip this.
Doing this will prevent you bricking anything.
MD5 Explained, every computer file is simply a string of 1's and 0's by running that string through a formula you can collect what's called an MD5 of the file, its a simple unique integrity check, if a download has went wrong, a file has been changed or someone's tampered with a file then the string of 1's and 0's will change and therefore the MD5.
By checking this value you can be certain a file is legitimate and uncorrupted. This is especially important when tampering with something as low level as firmware where even the slightest corruption will cause all kinds of bad things.
In the tools folder there's an exe called bspatch, this is a dos tool to patch the official firmware with kmeaws patch to wind up with kmeaws custom firmware.
2:
Move the PS3UPDAT.PUP file (MD5: ca595ad9f3af8f1491d9c9b6921a8c61)from the "Original Firmware" folder into the tools folder.
Move the patchfile (MD5:4287d778e06f42e90c413dbb5743e972) from the "Custom Firmware" folder into the tools folder.
Click on your START button and type CMD.EXE into your run box and this will open up a dos prompt.
Navigate in dos to the tools folder ie:
CD C:\PS3\Tools
This will place you into the right directory, its then simply a matter of typing:
bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP customfirmware.PUP patchfile
This will let bspatch do its magic and add a new file called customfirmware.pup into the Tools folder.
Right click that file and select properties, go to the Hash / CRC tab, make sure MD5 is ticked and click "Calculate" after a second a value should come up.
Make sure it matches: 2be5e87a22bf1e7f48e98fcabd38977b
If it did, YAY! If not, something went wrong, DELETE IT!
Check the MD5's of the patchfile and PS3UPDAT.PUP mach what they should and try the bspatch program again.
3:
Move the PS3UPDAT.PUP file into the "Original Firmware" folder
Move both the customfirmware.PUP file and the patchfile back into the "Custom Firmware" folder.
Rename the customfirmware.PUP file to PS3UPDAT.PUP for later.
Format a usb thumbdrive to FAT32 and make a folder on it called PS3 and make a folder in there called UPDATE in the UPDATE folder copy over the PS3UPDAT.PUP from the "Original Firmware" folder.
Everything should be uppercase
Check the MD5 again on the file in the thumbdrive in case there was a transfer error!
Eject the thumbdrive and plug it into your PS3
Browse to the system menu on your ps3's XMB and select "SYSTEM UPDATE"
Select the option to update from external media or something, dont click the INTERNET option.
Wait for it to do its thing.
Your now on a clean stock ps3 running 3.55 firmware.
Unplug the thumbdrive and slap it back into your computer.
4:
Delete the PS3UPDAT.PUP from the thumbdrives /PS3/UPDATE folder and transfer over the renamed PS3UPDAT.PUP file from your "Custom Firmware" folder.
Again once its done check the MD5.
On the bare root of the thumbdrive (the start where you can see a PS3 folder)
Transfer over the two files from the PKG's folder:
lv2.pkg
UP0001-GAIA01985_00-7679866932773369-GAMEZ.pkg
Unplug your thumbdrive and slap it back into your PS3.
Again go to the system menu and select "System update" click the option that's not the internet one.
Let it run through its cycle and voil? you've now got a hacked ps3.
5:
You'll notice a couple of differences in the game tab of the XMB namely an /App_Home/PS3_Game folder and an Install Package Files folder.
should see the two packages on your thumbdrive (if not then theyre not on the root of the thumbdrive)
Install both of them.
Lv2 isnt essential as its built into gaia manager but other packages might need it somewhere down the line, it doesnt do any harm.
Once you've installed them both, they should both appear in the bubble with your ps3 stuff.
Open Gaia manager, slap in a game and set it to work copying the disk to your /hdd0/GAMEZ folder or FTP the files over to the very same folder.
Once that's done you should see the game in the menu and see that hdd is highlighted on the bottom.
Turn on the diskless booting option and try and start it.
You'll be booted to the XMB again, don't worry.
Brows to the /App_Home/PS3_Game folder and you'll notice it changing to the game you've just installed.
click on it and play away. if there's an update and it dumps you after the game updates, don't worry just reopen Gaia and have it check the files to automatically fix the new eboot to run
Your probably wondering why i didnt just include the readymade PUP file in the rar right?
A combination of reasons really:
1: making it yourself isn't that hard, and after they release an update to the firmware people will need to do it again themselves using the same kind of method, consider it training.
2:LEGALITY the hacked PUP file is illegal, the patch file is legal because its all somsone elses own work and therefore nothing to do with sony.
The sony firmware is legal because its legal to distribute it as much as you want so long as its unmodified so noting in the actual rar is illegal.
This means Both myself and this forum don't get into any hot water from Sony going apeshit over hacked units.
What an end user does in the privacy of his or her own home is stricltly down to themselves.
So yeah,, its good practice and it keeps things legal
