You stated earlier that modding the console IE jailbreaking is not your intention.
1.So have you downloaded the latest 3.56 Firmware from the official Sony website?
2.What program are you using for extracting the download? IE winrar, Winzip , 7-Zip?
3.What download manager are you using IE , FF?
4. Any previous problems downloading from the internet like corrupt files?

Just a thought Here,
Have you got a powered USB HDD (with a fat 32 partition on it) or USB powered HUB?
If so try the firmware on the usb HDD, see if that works or if you have the powered Hub plug your USB pen into it and try to load firmware from there through the powered Hub.
Your USB ports may not be getting enough power through them?
I'm just thinking out loud so don't know if it would work, but no harm in trying.

Ahh Valid point @AllyCoops could be dodgy usb ports, especially if they have been well used, the fine copper pins can wear over time causing bad connectionsJust a thought Here,

It could if the ports have a short on the usb pins which could cause the motherboard to crash or become unstable. The console may also become unstable if there is an over heating issue which can cause hanging and eventually results in YLOD error. which may be the reason why you are mentioning if it has been opened before!Comment
