cannot find IP

I use a wired connection and obviously seeing as im posting on here i can connect to the net and surf etc..however, when i try to do the same on the ps it says system error please check setting..
I check the settings and all that need to be enabled ARE enabled so i try a connection test...
The connection test cannot find an IP address an therefore times out.
Any thought boys and girls?
