if its just on single lite the e74 then it is possable to sort out by taking the console apart and taking the heatsinks out, cleaning all the compound of them and the cpu and gpu replacing the compound then reput the heatsinks on.start it up,leave for five mins.then turn it off leave for 20 to 25 mins then turn back on..thats it job done you should now be all green and ready to go...good luck. (i had this prob but all is fine now)

You can buy an "x-clamp kit" for a few quid on ebay. Basically, you remove the stock x-clamps and replace them with M5 bolts, which enables better heat transfer between the CPU/GPU and the heatsink.

An RROD isn't a death sentence for your Xbox these days. Replacing the X-clamps works, but it's hard to say for how long. Some people get years, some days or weeks.

For a much better solution, you should get your console 'reballed', or 'reflowed' for a less reliable fix. The first xboxes were poorly designed and invariably suffered fatal overheating. In addition to the poor airflow owing to the design, MS used lead-free solder on their chips, as lead-free has a higher melting point. However the solder becomers brittle and develops fractures after repeatedly being subjected to the extreme heats of early consoles. 'Reballing' replaces the solder balls connecting the chips with leaded solder. The downside is that it can be quite expensive.

If your console is JTAGGED, I'd recommend reballing. If not, I'd recommend buying a new console with a Faclon or Jasper motherboard. There are additional preventative measures you can take to keep the console running cooler. The 12v fan mod increases the voltage/speed of the fans and knocks a considerable amount off your temps, but is very noisy. The fan shroud mod partitions the airflow to the GPU and CPU and is reported to knock a few degrees off GPU temps. Team-Xecuter have released a system of cooling fans that requires you to remove the DVD drive and make it external, with fans directed at the GPU heatsink and CPU. Although some people no longer recommend additional fans, the xFan kit from T-X is reported to work very well.

EDIT: As previous poster said, sometimes RROD can be fixed by simply cleaning your CPU and GPU of the old thermal paste and replacing it with new paste, ideally some Arctic Silver 5. You should also replace your GPU heatink with a version 2, if you currently have a version 1: the one without the extra bit.

I wouldn't do that. Yes, it works, but only briefly and causes damage that even reballing might not fix. The towel trick is a very crude and ineffective reflow.

Start with team-xecuters RROD fix. That should breathe new life into your console, until you need start looking at reballing.
