Well, Microsoft have indicated that they want the Xbox 360 to match the PS3's 10 year lifespan. So, the earliest we can expect the next-gen console is 2015. Both MS and Sony had hoped that their motion controllers would extend the life of the current systems.

Sony and MS not in it for the money then? It seems Sony have been losing money hand over fist with the PS3 making sure that they never lost the format wars this time. Unsure whether MS have been making money on 360's, I'd guess they haven't made that much off the hardware. The money is in the games - price of 5 or 6 games is the same price as a console.

Sell games for 10 years and make money that way.

Yes, game sales has always been where the money is. Profits from hardware sales are marginal compared to software. There was even a rumour at the date of launch that both MS and Sony were selling consoles at a price lower than it cost to make them, but I don't know how much truth was in that

The margins will be pretty close. You have to remember that both had HD DVD players in them. Whichever won the console war would win the format war for video's as well. MS lost, Sony won. Each and every video that gets sold earns Sony money, as well as the games. 360's won't be used for that many HD video's since no-one produces videos for that format any more.

It's no longer about the cost of the asset, but the profit made from aftersales, same as computer software.

Thats the way its been for a while. About 3 years ago, i read an article that only Nintendo made profit from the sales of thier mainstream conolse (wii)

However, for Sony winning the format/console war? Yes the won the media 1 (Bluray VS HD-DVD) but the console war? I believe the XBOX comes out better, its an older console, less powerfull but the online support for it is 2nd to none.

Lets not forget if Microsoft had been hacked to that extreme, i beleive XBL users would have serious doubts about the service.

In this age, XBOX VS PS3 there is no real winner, each have there pluses and minuses. I say each to thier own

Aye probably the case, but Sony will be laughing all the way to the bank on royalties until the next time that is. I do like my 360 more than my ps3, and the wii anyway. However it could be that people like 360's more because they were hacked sooner as well?

I have both 'hacked' and also a non hacked 360. I just think the 360 is a better machine. Its cheaper, better online ect. The PS3 does allot more, so appeals to more people, it supports more HD Formats ect.

I also remember a survey of the 3 main formats for games.

                PC came 1st
                360 2nd
                PS3 3rd

Yeah I think you guys are right, the consoles are made and sold with a loss of money. But its made back from games licensing and peripherals, thats why them official controllers are always the most expensive and why 3rd party controllers are so bad, they aren't allowed to be as good as the official ones, so to accum/recoup more cash.

As far as new consoles go, I think its funny how Sony watched Sega sink with the Saturn back in the 90's. Sega bragged of its multi processor power yet no one cared or wanted to make games that utilised its power. And now Sony have stupidly done the same with its Core cpu/gpu chip, no one cares or could be arsed to program games when it can be done on the humble multi core cpu with the same results, like the one on the 360.

Sony will more less bring out an uber version of the Core for their next console since they spent something like 400 million on R&D for it. And since the 360 is a pc in a console it'll just use a newer multi threaded cpu with somewhat the same results as Sony's chip. The only reason the PS2 won last gen was because of the playstation success, the original xbox offered more(hi def, hard drive and online play out of the box) and also was the more powerful machine, so MS I think deserve it for showing how simple it is to make a console work, instead of the Sony boys trying to make things all complicated with their new cpu's. Sony's time has gone, we always just wanted a "pc like machine" that just plays games, and that is the xbox.

Early rumours suggested that it will be called the 'Xbox 720', but I'd like it to be called the Xbox 3, although come to think of it, that'll just confuse people.

Initial tech spec of the new Nintendo are interesting, let's wait and see just how accurate they are.

ah ha!.. I do indeed mate.

Funny thing is, I already knew it's name was CELL, but whilst typing up that post I had cores and multi core cpus running through ma head, so musta made me subconsciously type "Core".

On a side note, I dont think Ninty will have anything good yet again, I hated the Wii with its fake half assed motion senor thing. They dont "try" anymore. I'm into realistic graphics and Nintendo don't do that anymore, so thats the last Nintendo I buy. People say graphics dont make games, well they DO make a game a hell of a lot more enjoyable when playing.
