Update to xbox live

When trying to join XBOX LIVE.........
When doing the Network Test it confirms all tests (Hard Wired;IP Address etc),then it comes down to XBOX LIVE,Seems to hang for a minute then confirms that a new upgrade is available,when saying yes to confirm the upgrade it then comes up with an error message saying it cant download the upgrade.
Any Help ?

Do you have a hard drive attached to your xbox as you need one to take the update ?

Any storage medium will do.

I updated mine using a 512mb memory card.
