xbox 360 modding advice please

Hi guys,
i need advice, i bought an RROD xbox 360 last night that i am going to repair.
the console itself is a white fat model built in '06.
i am a total n00b at the 360's with regards to jtagging/flashing etc etc.
what is the best route to go down with regards to modding it.
i would like to be able to play games off an external HDD (as there is not HDD with it) and play AVI movies files.

i have been looking at guides on building JTag cables and the like but it dont know what the best option is.

i want to do it as cheaply as possible.

will JTAG allow games and movies off External usb drive?
im not really concerned about live play. want it more as a media centre with ocasional gaming.

Yeah this hack allows unsigned code like emulators and games booted from external hdd

thanks again cunny, I have seen plans online for building your own jtag, is there any other things needed apart from the wire/resisters and diodes?
