What's wrong with my Xbox 360 slim?

When I turned on my 360 slim it shut itself off with an overheat warning even though it's only been on for about 30 seconds. When I restart it the message pops up again and keeps shutting it down. It fell cool and is definitely not overheated and even when I leave off for a while the it still keeps shutting itself off. It was playing fine the last time I played it and this problem just started happening.
Also please don't tell me about correctly inserting the hard drive or whatever because I know that's not the problem. I also have it on top of the T.V shelf with nothing blocking the vents so it's not like I have it in a poorly ventilated area, it's as openly ventilated as can be.
I would greatly appreciate any help as I don't want to have to resort to shipping in for repairs just yet if there's a simple solution I'm not getting.

If you have removed all usbs, hdd and its still doing it then it could be a send off job to MS.
