Xbox360 file playback help

i have an xbox360 i flashed it, t works fine with games and dvds..i use my usb hdd to play files off of it and it doesnt work, it finds the file and i press play but the screen goes black and nothing happens.
Now i have an xbox in the bedroom exactly the same and this works flawlessly, anyone able to shed any light on the issue i have?

i cant stream to the box as my net speed is slow as ~~~~! so i have had no issues using the usb hdd in the past with my other xbox and ps3 and even this xbox360 worked initially but now it doesnt

Try connecting the none working xbox to the TV in the bedroom. It may be some setting has been changed either on the Xbox or the TV and it will give you an idea which.

i have just tried this and still no good it loads up the film or tv show but the screen stays black, i can sometimes hear the sound though

What sort of files? Divx videos will need the codec downloading from ms
