You can mod the firmware in your 360 DVD drive, it will allow you to play copied games.

I cut a hole in the top of mine and installed some cold cathodes. Doesn't really do anything though, but it does look awfully pretty.

there are lots more you can do if you look on youtube some show you how to fit it and what they do so have a gander on there

how easy is it to chip XBOX 360? Or is there a way NOT to chip but still able to play backup?

You can flash the drives with a custom firmware that allows back ups to be played
