how do i play mp4 files off line

hi
got my lad an old phat xbox360, flashed the drive,
and only plays it off line
i've done him a dvd with football tricks on it, mp4 format
we have just updated xbox via battleships game
when i put this football tricks dvd into xbox it says go on line for update, but we don't have internet at his home
also seen that xbox only plays mp4 files if you are on line is that right

any help please

you can only play avi files if your connected to xboxlive. you need to convert mp4 to avi and connect to live it then download optimal media update!

tried google and did not get anywhere with it,
so i thought i'll ask to see if i can do it
