More info would be needed, has flash ever been attempted? IF so could be lost key so RGH would be needed (if applicable) to retireive key

Other soloution could be weak laser...

Do you know which model an how much?

If it shows DVD when you put a game disk in it most likely has had a bad firmware flash. Best solution is to extract DVD firmware key from the drive and reflash using Jungleflasher. Plenty of guides online. If you haven't bought it yet I wouldn't bother to be honest.

it could be a lost drive key, bad firmware flash or a weak laser, however play dvd is usually a lost drive key.
if the price is right it would be worth buying, just make sure it's dashboard is below 2.0.14719 just in case it is a lost drive key, then it can be rgh'd to get the drive key back.
to pay someone for key recovery would cost you about ?15 to ?20 plus shipping.
if it's just a weak laser they are about ?5 to ?8 and dead easy to change.
if its just a bad flash it depends what drive it is, to what equipment you will need, but it shouldn't be more than ?10 to ?15 if you pay someone to do it for you.

If it's below the dash stated then it would be worth rgh alone. As long as it's a hdmi console

            Lets wait for more info

Most probable reason for the 'insert dvd' message is that the drive has been replaced and hasn't been matched to the motherboard - therefore will never be able to play games (except the odd demo). I'd give it a body swerve. A word of advice when buying an xbox 360......pull off the front panel and check the seal. If it's broken then don't buy it (unless it's been opened for modding in which case you might be interested).
