    modding an xbox

    Hi

This is my first message and it's a call for help really, I've seen a similar post on here and the help you guys gave was really good so I thought I'd join up and hopefully you can help me.

I've just bought a cheap spare xbox, I'm wanting to modify it so I can play backed up games but also make it in to a media centre a bit like a jailbroken apple tv.

I've been reading a little about flashing but it's not very clear whether this will allow me to make it in to a media centre as well as playing games.

It sounds like XBMC is the way to go to run the media side of things.

So I guess my questions are, is any of the above nonsense (please correct me) and is flashing the way to go our would an alternative mod approach be better. I suggest flashing as it seems like the easiest way for me to DIY.

I'm a complete noob so jargon and acronyms may loose me, apologies.

    Many thanks for your assistance

    Re: modding an xbox

If you want it for running homebrew etc tben rgh is the way you want to go. This allows you to run unsigned code like the f3 dash emulators an so on.

Flashing is putting custom firmware on the dvd drjve to allow backups to be played fom a dvd+r dl which can also be used on xbox live

are you talking original xbox or xbox 360?
to do what you want with an original xbox is just a softmod and is awesome for xbmc,
the xbox 360 will never run xbmc, even if it has been jtagged or rgh'ed.

if you have a xbox 360 you have 3 options,

drive firmware flash = allows you to play burnt game disks, can still connect to live at your own risk,

RGH / jtag, = allows unsigned code such as custom dash boards, the ability to play your games straight of a hdd, (no need for disks) but you cannot use xbox live.

xkey or wasabi optical drive emulators = allows you to play iso games from a external hdd.

up to you which one you choose, personally if you dont want it on live, I'd go for a rgh and a drive flash,

ah so there is really no way I can turn it in to a better media centre than it already is. What I wanted was something like a jackbroken apple TV that would also play the backed up games. It's sounding like I can't have both on one xbox.

It's an xbox 360 by the way, not sure of model but it's white.

I also no of no plans fror a release of xbmc on the 360 even if there was, the console would need to be rgh.

If your looking into this then you will need to post further details like drive type an if its hdmi console + motherboard type + dashboard version
