you can, but when i looked into it it seemed far to complicated. its not like modding the wii for example. it also depends what you want done.
i didn't flash mine i had it rgh'd so i can use a hhd instead of burning disks, but i can no longer go on xbox live (there is an alternative though called link). it would of cost me ?50 to do it myself and it involves a lot of soldering, so for an extra ?30 i got someone else to do it.

Have a look at a " replacement unlocked pcb " might be an alternative solution to enable you to play your back ups. heres a link to a video -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wnzcrn4v8M

I have also looked and yes does look complicated! I would prefer to try and keep xbox live and would be happy to burn onto disk so flashing is an option, I will look into this further.
im back on shift work now so will be next week I get a chance look into it but will report back another time.
            Cheers for your help anyway..

It all depends on the make/model of the drive inside. When you find that out, post the info and i will send you in the cotect direction. Until then, its guess work.

                For example

DG-16D4S - Winbond - Kami hack to unlock drive or replacement PCB
DG-16D4S - Mcix - Sputnik unlock or replacement PCB

Hitachi drive - Replacement PCB and Nand dump requored for drive info

DG-16D5S - Replacement PCB and Nand dump required for drive nfo

Other option is RGH and run unsigned code

Are you still looking for help with this? I've done a fair few slims with the replacement PCB.
