Yes you can do that, but if you've already been on live I suggest you spoof the new drive to whatever your old one was.

You cnt just 'drop' any drive in an xbox 360, they have a unique 'key' that is coded to a specific motherboard, so in sense each motherboard is coded to a certain dvd rom.

To change a drve you must spoof the drives information over to the new drive from the old 1, if you dont you wil get an expensive dvd player.

What issues are you having with a 78?

This is right but since you were having trouble flashing I assumed you had already read the key from the original drive.
Even if you haven't already got it, as long as you don't throw the old one away you can get it any time you want.

Well we are to help you mate, once you know how to do a drive then they not hard, hitachis are always a pain to flash, setting mode B.

This is they way i flashed a 78 last time.

With 360 on its own power, boot pc with slax, this will set mode B on the hitachi.
Check for mode B, signs are 2 presses on eject, drive will shut, then open again after 30s to 60s. Press a 3rd time (3 times) to keep the drive shut with an original dvd in.
Boot pc into windows, wait for windows to detect the drive an instal drivers.
              Take out the dvd rom.
Load jungleflasher, recommend latest version tho i used 1.62.
Follow the guide for jungleflasher just ignoring the mode B directions as you have all ready set it.
