    XBox live and homeplugs

    Hi,

Some advice please off you good folk.

Got my lad an Xbox Elite for his birthday, spot on, now he is wanting Xbox live for xmas.

Now, modem and router downstairs, lad upstairs.

Was a little loathe to get the Xbow wireless device but have seen these homplug devices and they have had good wright ups.

A few questions. There are 14 Mbps, 85 Mbps, and 200 I think. It's only to play online, so would 14 Mbps be enough?

Are they better than wirless? as this is near enough cable, so faster download, less lag, breakup etc?

    Anyone use and recomend them??

    Thanks in advance.

You can set up a free 1 month account if the box is brand new.
Make a hotmail account on pc.
Go to Xbox 360 create new profile and connect to live. Create gamertag when asked to purchase live skip this and it will say your entitled to a free month.

As for the wireless should be fine for connecting although i always do all my connections wired.

        Cheers cgscott.

It was really the wired route I would prefer, and wondered if these homeplugs are the way forward.

The 1 month free tip is useful, ta

Home plugs are great plug and play, i use a few round the house for xbox 360, cable box.... it uses the existing home electrical network to send the wireless signal around the house, great bit of kit.

ITgate TGM220 (swapable tuner), Dreambox 800 pro, Dreambox 500c x 2, DBox, Popbox media player.

Just to confirm on the above post, I also use the homeplugs for the xbox and the dream, it works perfectly.

They only thing I would say, is go for the 200. Usually IME (depending on brand) the true speed is just above half the advertised speed.

              Still much better than wireless.

              Real men have FTTH.

We use Netgear XET1001 Powerline units. Right now our 85mbps units are running at 41.09mbps. No point in buying a 200mbps if your house wiring is a bit crap...So much depends os the wiring in your house, and what is the resistance of your ring main circuit. The further away these plugs are from each other, the more of a drop in speed you need to expect. So i recon most people buying these are actually overkilling the project...

Thanks all, have gone for Belkin powerline 85mbps.

The downstairs plug ring and upstairs plug ring use same fuse box. Should that be ok?

As long as your house has a standard incoming single phase supply, there is no problem with your selection. If you have the option to set up security on these powerline adaptors, i advise that you use it. This is because anybody in your street who is on the same phase colour mains supply as you, can possibly connect to your internet and also your home network.

                        Hi,

I have a Devolo 200Mbps homeplug kit and it never runs anywhere near it's rated speed.... The LAN interfaces inside the devices are actually only 100Mbps anyway so it's a bit OTT.

Performance wise the homeplugs are pretty good, so long as your internal wiring is nice and neat and not spread over more than 3 floors or an extension. You get an extra 2-3ms ping through the homeplugs over wired, but that isn't noticeable at all.

Overall they are a great piece of kit. Better, neater, faster and more reliable than wireless IMO.
