lights on the controller

hi to all
first off i know nothing at all about the xbox 360
but a friend has asked me a question and i thought the people here may be able to help
when playing a game on player1, on the controller there is one light indicating that he is player1, but during the game the lights spin and he does not know what this means
can anybody shed light (pardon the pun) on this

if it's a wireless controller it means the batteries are about to go.

Not always (click the middle button to check the batteries though) ive noticed it a lot with different games, some titles strobe the shit out of your controller for reasons best known to the developers.

Some flash when missions are updated and the like, it never seems to be consistent, but i guess its just coders playing with the controller sdk and treating it like rumble.
