    Controll pads disconnecting.

Got a problem with my standard xbox 360 arcade's controll pads. They disconnect all the time when playing , if i give it a slight knock the pads turn off... ive tried having a go at stretching the springs, replacing the batteries, and putting pieces of cardboard in to try and jam the contacts tighter together, but it still keeps happening and it's very hard not to launch the pad at my bedroom wall. It happens to both of my pads and my mate has the same problem with his too, I'm using a wired one at the min.

Anyone else get this problem ? They're a bit too pricey just to go out and buy more, so i'd be very greatfull to anyone with ideas as to repairing them.

Dunno how long i'll last without throwing them at the wall or hitting them with a big hammer.

Sounds like a loose connection in the battery clip.

The bit the batteries go "in" before you clip it into the pad theres a switch.

If you flip it around you'll see a metal rectangle (smack dab in the middle) that corresponds to a plastic nubbin inside the pad, the plastic bit pushes down on the rectangle causing the contacts to connect and allows power to complete a circuit, if your nubbin is worn or the contacts have been pushed too far apart you'll get problems.

Just wedge something in there to make sure its always depressed to the max and you should be fine, a matchstick or the like should work out fine.

I cant find my phone cable or id upload pictures to show you exactly what i mean, but its smack bang in the middle of the battery holder thingy so you shouldnt miss it.

hey mate do you have any solder? if yes then roll 2 little bits or solder an put one each down the holes where the battery then see if the probs go away.

i have fixed my sisters by doing the same thing.

aaaaaah, i see what you mean now, that plastic 'nubby' presses on the metal contact and makes a connection between the two cells, god knows why they thought it nescessary to isolate the two batteries from each other when not in use ???
I took 'em both back to argos today and they swapped them over for a pair of brand new ones... but , one of them still has the same problem ( allbeit not as bad ) when i give it a fair few knocks with the palm of my hand it turns off... either i've been really, really unlucky or this must be a pretty common problem ? what a totaly shit design flaw, them contacts will only have a limited number of cycles before they go limp anyway.. I reckon the wired 360 pad is brilliant, takes loadsa knocks, so why've they gone and used a poxy, namby-pamby switch contact that they don't even need ? i'm gonna open the little battery holder pack up and solder the little ~~~~er shut. </rant>

Cheers chroma.. woulda never realised there was a switch there.

The contact is there because most people opt for rechargable batteries.

Nickel Metal Hydride and Nickel Cadmium batteries have a tendancy to explode if one cell has a full charge and the other is fully discharged, this causes the discharged cell to go into negative voltage and start to vent gases as the substrate breaks down.

I guess microsoft designers thought that customers complaining about losing a hand was worse than losing conectivity

i actualy find it useful to be honest, if im watching a movie in bed i flick the button and the power drops meaning i dont roll over onto the pad or knock it and skip stuff

losing a hand worse than control-pad connection dropping out half way through a split-screen deathmatch on CODMW2 ? Get yer priorities right man.

Thanks again chroma, i'm still gonna solder it up...but will bear that in mind if i ever switch to rechargeables.
