    Try newsbin/usenet
i think you need an invite from a user though
Otherwise i have used binverse in the past.
They do a great free trial
Newsbin have a larger file retention than binverse but it is getting better.

just get alt.binz, in the server setup part use,
      news.virginmedia.com (thats the news server)
      32 connections,
      no pasword / username
      ssl / NO
Cost / FREE you get it free with your virgin broadband.
you will also have to sighn up to a NZB indexing site or use binsearch or newzleach.
you have 7 days retention and it goes as fast as your line allows, remember to get all your stuff overnight or you will get capped.
unless you realy want ssl then you wil have to go to somewhere else like astraweb or something.

          Secure Sockets Layer

encryption protocol that helps stop your isp / other people from knowing what you download.

Vm's is great as its free, however 7 days retention is just not enough. Astraweb is the best I have used and it only works out about ?7 a month. Use in conjunction with NZB Matrix which has a one off cost for VIP membership for about a fiver. Without VIP status you can only download files upto 20 days old which is great for new releases, but not enough in reality. I would also reccomend Grabit as your NZB client (free)

Is there a good solution for older games? I've only recently got an Xbox but want to get hold of games like FEAR and the first Mass Effect finding games 3+ years old seems to be quite difficult.

Newzbin is shite atm, invitations are locked and the site is shut down for the most part due to a recent court case. All illegal stuff is screened manually by the owners by court order. GAY!

everything I want I manage to get through vm just keeping up with the new releases.
if I want anything older I look on megaupload / rapidshare and use SkipScreen - a Megaupload, Mediafire, and Rapidshare Plugin for Firefox. Like a free premium account! through firefox.

if it's on rapidshare or mega upload yes you can download as much as you like.
just open the link(s) and leave it till its done.

Bear in mind that although newsgroups are generaly faster, they're also being closely monitored at the moment.

If i walk into court as part of a civil piracy suit i can use the defence that it wasnt me that torrented the item, my network is insecure etc.

If its the same charge on a newsgroup im effectively shafted because theres admissable evidence that my credit card was used, to pay for my account, which was used to download whatever.

This is especialy important considering the new draconian "Digital Economy Bill" which just got passed.

So yeah newsgroups are faster but theyre also far less secure in terms of legal loopholes should the worst case happen

Agreed that Usenet are being targetted at the moment, and severly, but bear in mind, if you are using SSL on the services that providers are offering and subscribed services then, ISP logs can show how much you have downloaded, but not what.

Newsgroups have material that is not copyrighted in any shape or form, most are used to download illegal content. Just a fast service that people can share information, pic ect other than websites.

If people want to use newsgroups to download, then please be aware that the hammer is coming down hard, at the moment its only been sites targetted, but could soon be abusers of the speeds.

This opens up another topic in my opinion. ISP's are offerering 50mb services, soon going to be offering 100mb services here in the UK, for basic web browsing ect who would need a 10mb service at home? ISPs are increasing speeds of thier broadband and expecting people not to take advantage of the speeds some downloading services offer. Again though, another topic.

For a usenet server, it depends on retention you want, virgin have 5-7 days and restrcited groups. Pay for a service, you wont look back.

                              Newsservers log ip's eg:
                              64.255.128.73 connected 2010-05-07 02:00:48;
                              64.255.128.73 began transfer of Fringe.S02E21.HDTV.XviD-LOL.r01 to Fringe.S02E21.HDTV.XviD-LOL.r25 totaling 375.0mb (excluding par2's)

SSL protects the contents of an individual packet, not the actual endpoints, its impossable to encrypt the actual protocol headers so addresses and times are still very traceable
All SSL does is obscures what your downloading, not when or from where.

Theres nothing to prevent anyone snooping on the connected IPs of a server and watching whats being distributed, then its only a matter of tracking backwards to the isps and news providers for customer details.
