xbox 360 elite 3 red lights

hi there ive just got an elite off my friend for my son and i new it had 3 red lights now the problem is that ive just recieved it through the post and ive opened the box to see that he has tryed opening the xbox its nothing major but there are very slight marks where his tryed opening it and there is a very slight gap between the two side cases. any way ive phoned xbox to get a repair which is being sorted and i told him about what my friend had tryed to do and he said that once microsoft have recieved the box if they fill it has been tampered with or the seal has been broken they will send it back without repair.
so i dont now what to do weather to send it and wait the 2 to 3 weeks he stated to see if it does get repaired or is there any other way of fixing it for long term i dont really wont to try and repair it and it doesnt last very as im trying to do this without my son knowing.
any help would be good thanks for looking

Send it away. If they feel its been tampered with you will get it back.

If not then you will receive it back fixed.

    Nothing lost something gained maybe?

I have sent plenty 360's back to M$ for repair (its amazing how many people don't know about the 3 yr RROD warranty)
          My gain
Most units had previosly been flashed so had been opened.
But where possible i returned them back to stock firmware before sending them back.
Some had blatant signs of being opened but never had 1 returned unfixed. some were even missing the seal
Mind you that was before the big ban wave last year so just be careful as if it is flagged or banned they will just send it back and try and charge you for the shipping.

They are checking them now. I have had a few returned.

Same applies to all the accesories. They send a courier to pick up the broken item before sending out a replacement.

Over the years i have had about 10 free controllers off them and a couple of webcams. Not any more

Man it pretty irritates me that so many people are experiencing problems with the 360. Sometimes I wonder if the 360 actually is a prototype.

Only older models. New models will run forever.
