The same reason PS3 do. To get people to buy the console if they really want the game.

        I REALLY WANNA PLAY XYZ!
but xyz was only released on whatever platform.
Soloution? buy into whatever platform has the games you want to play.

Its called marketing and buisiness economics, if your the only person supplying something then theres no competition to compete with which means you can set market prices to your benifit

I can understand marques have exclusive games, its part of their selling point. I find it a little more worrying how Xbox managed to secure the recent MW2 DLC release a month earlier than Sony. Where is this likely to lead? I can see DLC being released for single platforms so that even though you've got the game you still can't play large sections of it that friends with other consoles can.

Money talks. And MS are tycoons in the gaming world. All rights will always go to Xbox.

i suppose the when you have the head of the corporation(microsoft) being listed as one of the words richest men, then it gives you some clout during negotiations with software publishers.

Its not as straightforward as that, its more to do with market saturation than who has more money.

As a developer or publisher your goal is to reach as many people as possible, if a console has sold more units than another then your always going to aim to get your software onto that platform.

                    Review copies.
                    Preview copies.
                    Pre pressed masters.
Straigt from the factory presses by employees.
                    From disgruntled developer employees.
                    From disguntled publishist employees
From disgruntled autorisation employees (ie: games are sent to sony/microsoft etc before being licenced by either to run on their consoles)

Theres a lot of ways to get a release out early as it has to go through an entire series of steps before it goes from release build to final commercial pressing.
