What i do mate is i put my downloads (newsgroups) on 70% bandwidth leaving 30 % for the xbox and other things. So i never get any lag.

Thats on a 20mb line so my downloads can go on all day 24/7 if need be.

I use albinz but im sure all the other software will have this option to change max download speed as well.

What software do you use for newsgroups?
Just try what i suggested and see what happens.

Port forwarding is easy enough to do but isnt really needed on the xbox. Especially if your with VM. Only times ive had to port forward someones xbox is down to the type of router they have had.

I prefer netgears or Dlink routers.

I also have vm 50mb. i cant fault it at all. I use usenetserver and for the reader i use grabbit from sheams. I get the full 50mb when downloading. never had a prob with any lagging on the xbox and thats through a wifi d link router. you should do a speed test to see what your getting and if its not right get on the phone

            Strict

Port Forwarding can effect the xbox especially with older games like call of duty 3 and so on, also it can effect comms on newer games..you can test the connection on the xbox by going to settings , network settings , test connection, when you do if the connection is being restricted by your router then the test normally says your NAT settings are strict, if it is all ok then it says connected to xbox live no problem...

Most modern routers usually have a preset for xbox live now and can be ticked from your router page and this will allow full data flow through the relevant ports (all the hard work done for you )...

You can look at your router setup page from any web browser by typing its ip address into the url window, the default ip address will be something like 192.168.2.1

and if passwords have not been set they will also be default, something like admin , password

You can google the make of router you have and find default ip address....user name and password

            hope this helps

I use usenetserver. you get 2 options when paying. You can have 10 or 20 connections. I just go for the 10 as i still get the full speed with it. Usenetserver has no download limit. It takes me 23 mins to download 4.7gb. For a news reader i use grabbit from shemes. Its very easy to use. Latley i have also found that vm now have traffic managment for news groups. I just click the ssl connection on grabbit and it seems to bypass it at the moment. the only downside is that i cant control my download speed with grabbit but another news reader may be more helpfull
