if you are with virgin they have a free server which will max out your connection.

          server name: news.virginmedia.com
          connections: 10
          retention: 7 days

you have to be carefull with it, you will get throttled if you abuse it during the day.

you can d/l as much as you want between 9pm and 9am

the speed will be restricted between 9pm and midnight. between midnight and 9am you get maximum speed.

Not sure if it has been posted elsewhere but to clarify. There are two restrictions on virgin.
            - First there are download volume limits which apply to non-50mb/100mb accounts. These end at 9pm.

            - Second Virgin do traffic shapping for usenet and P2P, reducing it to around 25% or less of your package size. These run from midday (weekend) and 5pm (weekday) until midnight but are dependant on your location. I don't get throttled as much as people in other areas who seemed to be throttled every day.

Basically schedule all your downloads overnight and you will be fine.

Once you are hooked then have have a look at astraweb who have around 1000 days storage (almost 3 years worth of posting) for $11 a month. Basically just about any common game, movie, TV show, music, ebook, that you can think off.

ASTRA offer SSL encrypted connections to avoid traffic shaping and other such ISP evilness... i've found though.... connecting to eu.astaweb on port 8080 (usually used for webservers) instead of the default port, gives me full throttle bandwith haha VM, nice-one .. they also offer a 1-time 'pay-as-you-go' type package with a 180GB download quota at $25 USD for peeps not happy with a monthly deal ( where i started... soon as it ran out, took out monthly deal ).. never been with anyone else though, so can't compare.

yes, 9pm to 9am is fine, but they still restrict your d/s from 9 to midnight....

                Our traffic management policy

due to the crappy 7 days retention i scour the net for material every night

and just use torrents for older stuff...

I've found that I only hit the 9pm to midnight if I d/l more than 1gb on three consecutive days so I usually d/l overnight every other day and use megaupload for older films and games (to try them and see if I like them before deleting them) and buying the original just like everybody else
TRY DROPBOX 2GB + 500mb FREE ONLINE STORAGE with public sharing and 500mb for me

i find its a hit and a miss between 9 and midnight whatever i download, tonight it seems steady at 430kb/s.
some nights it stops completely, but i do download alot of stuff. (night time of course).

i also like to try before i buy

i rarely d/l during the day anymore, but i do sometimes and keep a close eye, i ~~~~in hate being throttled.

                    what package you on?

I'm on the old M package of 20megs I think it is. The missus refuses to call them and upgrade even though we are being ripped off something awful going by the new prices but the ~~~~ers won't talk to me cause it's not my name on the bill. For what I pay I should be getting at least 30 megs

they will talk to you m8, i'm in the same position.
they ask for your account details, then all she has to do is go on the phone and agree to let you talk for her.
then you can deal with them...

i'm on 20meg too, basic tv and phone.

last time i phoned they reduced my bills, went from ?42 down to ?31.....

I believe 20mb customers will be upgraded to 30mb anyway. It's best to ask for price reduction rather than an upgrade in speed in your case.

30mb service comes with higher daytime/evening download limits.
