Cant open files on back-up dvd

Can anyone throw a little light on this problem.
I have photos, videos etc stored on a dvd that's about 6 yrs old.
I have often ran it and taken photos from it without a problem.
Now for some reason it wont allow me to access any of these files.
I can see the files on the disc but when i click to view them they wont open!!
I tried it on Xp, Vista and linux, ive also tried opening with different software inc image xtender without sucess.
Any ideas anyone?? is the dvd ~~~~ed? Has it got a shelf life? its not scratched or damaged.

Yes they do have a shelf life, the more you pay for the blanks the longer they last.

You can try lots of things to get the data off, most likely to succeed is to take an ISO from it or use dd under linux to grab the whole disk.

Probably you will find some utilities that you can tell to keep trying and eventually you should get most things back provided it isn't too knackered.

Adjusting the power output of the laser in your DVD drive may allow you to read the disk enough to back it up. But it will depend on which drive you have as to how easy it will be to adjust.
If you don't own a multimeter, or know how to use one, it's not the solution you want to use.

Thanks for the quick reply mate... but just tried isobuster and got ~~~~ all from the disc.
I've also tried some photo recovery software to no avail.
Bit ironic they're called memorex dvds didnt think theyd pack in less than 6 yrs.
Im pretty sick about this as i have some photos of family holidays and occasions on it.
If anyone else has any ideas please throw them out.

How about trying to rip the DVD?

With something like DVD Shrink..I take it you can't even see it in DOS??

I would try and find software for recovery of formatted disks or deleted from drive. I can't remember what the program name was but it was a data recovery software and that worked great for what your problem is. I will post it if I can find it.
