Any advice would be helpfull here before I dismantle lappy..The problem I have is that the screen flickers badly or goes off completely and cursor is frozen while flickering, I can make the picture stable and cursor work by pushing the top corners of the screen in opposite directions to twist it but have to hold it there so have no hands left to use cursor. Sometimes it will stay on if the laptop is opened to just the right position but can take ages fiddling about with it..............Is this likely to be caused by a loose cable to moby or something altogether different. Can we remember that I have only ever worked on desktops but I suppose the pricipal is the same

It will be one of two possible problems. You are almost there with connection issues....
Depending on the age of the lappy I would be thinking about the ribbon between the two halves of the lappy. These are always a weak spot on mobiles as well.
The other is the connection to the LCD. But this would point to a more physical issue... like being dropped or water damage. It's also possible if the lappy is opened by the same corner everytime there could be damage to the solder joints from ribbon to LCD.
Think you're gonna have to open it up.
You could try connecting to a tv/monitor via the VGA port. This could rule out more serious problems on the motherboard.Canker

Thanks for that it is the step daughters lappy and there is a strong possiblity it has been dropped even though it will have been mr nobody and in general she seems to think that the top of the screen is a handle to which she has been warned that method of transport won't do it any good but what do I know I've only been using computers since the old zx spectrum with the rubber keys (I'm sure there is a few us who still remember them) Showed my 8 year old a picture of one and he just laughed at meIt will be one of two possible problems. As Canker has said, plug it into an external monitor to rule out MB/Graphics card problems. If all ok remove the screen cover and visually inspect cables from MB to screen and inverter. Usually one is loose or damaged. Replace or repair.
Most screens can be removed easily without much disassembly, a decent disassembly guide for your model number should keep you right."What we've got here is failure to communicate."Comment
