i can't seem to do this in windows 7 so any help would be appreciated

click on Start and type cmd into the search box then click on cmd to open the command in dos
copy and paste the following (if your CD drive is not D then change it to your drive letter)

    dir D: /b /s >c:\files.txt

This will give you a text listing file in your root C: drive called "files.txt".
open the file and Copy/paste the folder names you require into word

or there are programs (like Print Folder) that will save a copy of folders names in text format which you will be able to copy/paste from

You can still do this in 7. In fact, following your instructions, I've just done it in both notepad and Word 2007.

What is happening when you're doing it? If it's opening the folder you may want to change the double click speed in control panel > mouse.

i've decided to go for this freebee Copy filenames to the Windows clipboard with CopyFilenames v3.1

it adds extra context into the right click options most helpfully 'copy folder name'

if anyone does come up with a solution to my problem i will be more than gratefull
              cheers
