Floppy, before you buy that make sure your TV has VGA input as you have not listed it. If you post a picture of the back panel or TV make and model then I am sure somebody can look it up.u want something like this , u dont need hdmi just monitor plug on tv 2M S-VGA Laptop to PC HD TV Cable with Audio Jack Lead | eBay UK if u pm them they can make a longer one if u wantComment

As the world moves to HDMI I have starting to see more budget sets with VGA connections. I guess it saves a few quid.Never seen an HD tv without a com port

A couple of sources are saying the set sports component video (aka YPbPr/YCbCr)? If this is the case, the AVerMedia KeyLite (aka AVerKey Lite) is capable of 1024 x 768 resolutions over YPbPr.
Unfortunately it seems to be discontinued and new-old stock sits around the ?50 mark: PC to TV Convertor Free Delivery : PC to TV Products : Maplin
There are 2 used on Amazon Marketplace from ?25 + postage: [ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0000CEARD/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used]Amazon.co.uk: Used and New: AVerKey Lite[/ame]
Another option is the USB powered Q-Waves Wireless USB to HDMI Extender: Q-WAVESWIS1 Q waves QWAVES Wireless USB Data Kit QW Retail Packaging Q WAVESWIS1 Q WAVES
However, this is not without it's draw backs. Wireless video is renown for interference problems - especially those operating in the 2.4GHz frequency.
Plans are a foot to phase out VGA as the de facto standard video connection. AMD, Dell, Intel, Lenovo, LG Display, and Samsung released a joint statement that by 2015 VGA and LVDS "will no longer be supported in any of their products".Last edited by little pob; 6 May, 2011, 23:19.Comment

As the OP mentioned, the TV does not have a VGA input so no, a PC to monitor cable is not going to work.
Unfortunately there is no easy solution. I have used VGA to TV convertors in the past and TBH the quality is so and so. And there is no easy way to add HDMI to a laptop.
If all you are planning on doing is media playback then the best and highest quality option may be to a get a networked streamer which can be had around ?75.Comment

Take a look at this site, How To Connect Laptop To TV | Geek with Laptop
The important guts of it are:
*A VGA connector and cable are used to carry analog video signals plus display and graphics data. The VGA is a 15-pin connector commonly found on laptops and other devices. With this port you need a PC-to-TV Convertor to connect laptop to TV. You simply plug the VGA cable from the source into the convertor, and use an S-Video or RCA cable out to the TV. The converter is USB powered, so there?s no external power adapter to carry around, making this laptop to TV connection entirely portable.
other than that to watch movies thru the telly, I would be buying a cheap media player for about ?25. Probably a similar price to any convertors you will have to buy.

Remembering that the maximum resolution that composite and s-video where designed to support was PAL 576/25i (768x576).
Though an s-video cable can carry a progressive SVGA (800x600) signal, the TV set is likely to overscan as they do not expect any resolution higher than 576/25i.Comment

I have used several of these types of convertors and as I mentioned I have never found the quality to be that great. OK for basic viewing but VGA quality at best but more often will look more like VHS.The important guts of it are:
