Yeah, I believe ya, altho not used em myself, but thats why I would recommend even a basic media player.

The question now... What lead would I connect from Lappy to media player to view my movies on the hard drive?

Interesting question. I would get a network based player and then you either use a crossover ethernet cable or wire it in to your home network. But network streamer is around ?75 for something like WD live.

Cheaper would be a standalone player like the sumvision which is a great player and 50 quid cheaper but no network connection only USB and card reader. You could put your media onto a USB stick but I think of a easy way of connecting the two together.

yes, that's why I mentioned it. Its a good player but personally I would fork out the extra for one with a network connection or get a NAS box, file server or PC with media playback.

Ahh sorry, misread. Yeah I agree with you, I would too.
I suppose floppy was hoping for a quick simple solution. Sorry floppy, ditch the lappy and buy one with HDMI output. Or buy a portable HDD and media player. Or go for a networked Media Player.
EIther way is not gonna be cheap and quick.

HDMI can carry VGA signals without the need for conversion, he can just get a VGA to HDMI cable and a 3.5mmjack to 2xRCA-Phono for the audio unless his tv is 3.5mm instead of rca in which case he just needs a straight through 3.5 to 3.5

Both cables should set him back under a tenner

The only problem with the setup is that it doesn't allow for carriage of HDCP data, this only means he wont be able to play certain blu-ray's through the connection from his lappy though.

For that to work the video card must support digital signal out over VGA which as far as I know most devices don't support.

There are VGA to HDMI convertors available for around ?40 though there are few limitations with supported resolutions.

Since the NV 5000 series most manufacturers have added VGA 15-D subs from the ramdac and also output either raw or encoded digital from the ramdac. This meant that the ramdac could be standardised to easily incorporate DVI and cut down on the fabrication units.

I cant remember whether this is raw Low-Voltage Differential or encoded with Transmission Minimised Differential Signals.

At the end of the day its a 50/50 I figure and at the worst case the guys out a couple of quid for a cable before having to resort to throwing down cash money on a transcoder
