I've always thought AMD were faster and have always usually gone for AMD for the price for performance, until the new Intel sandy bridge cpu's arrived, they are quick!

Go for the newer I7 (sandy bridge) not the first I7 which is noticeably slower

AMD used to rule the roost when it came to 'enthusiasts' due to the value and overclockability of their older lines (eg athlon) but in recent years intel has clawed the market back with some stonkingly good value overclockers , but it comes down to what you want it for and how much cash you wanna spend and if you fancy a bit of overclocking or not... then being smart with your choices, most people overspend on their processor and cut corners elsewhere on the system, and if it's for a gaming rig, you should be worrying more about graphics cards, nearer the top-end of the ranges you pay a lot more for small jumps in performance, but when trying to compare CPU prices for a new build, add-in motherboard and ram before you do the sums, as motherboards/ram for different CPUs vary wildley in price. Also there's still not many apps, especially games that take decent advantage of multiple cores so less cores/ faster speeds is sometimes better.

What you looking to build ?

I dont have any games on my PC, its just for work, lot of automotive software, Ive had AMD for the last 10+ years and am real happy with performance and reliability, me dad's up to date Intel is very slow compared to my lower GHz AMD

                            Another thing to remember.... Memory

If the processor is how fast you can run

Then the memory is how much room you have to run in.

The more memory you have, the faster the processor can run. One of the quickest & easiest ways to get a computer to run faster is to max the memory. Then look at overclocking.

My netbook & a pc at work both have 1.6GHz dual core processors, both running XP.

The PC has 750MB (or there abouts) of memory, where the netbook has 1GB of memory.
My netbook is far quicker than the PC.

It doesnt pay to be loyal to one manufacturer.. do the homework before you spend the cash and go for the one with the best bang-per-buck at the time, i've had loads of both chips over the years... intel celeron, amd duron, amd sempron, amd athlonXP, amd athlon64, amd opteron, intel pentium4, intel core2, intel core2quad... all chosen because of their price/performance value and overclockability... (well , apart from first 2.. i was skint).
