normally if you left click on the WiFi icon (in the bottom right hand corner) a pop up box comes up with your router name
right click on the name and choose connect, it should ask for the password.
providing you type in the password correctly it should connect

if its seeing but not connecting then its an issue with the password post of the time. What OS are you running?

When you first access the router there will be no password.

When you set up the password on the router it has to restart. When it does you will need to enter the password on your connection. In windows 7 this is automatically requested via a pop up box. Vista is a pain in the ass, it's usually easier to delete the connection details & start a new connection process.

What might be easier is to rename the router, without a password, then stop broadcasting the BSSID. This will make it invisable to most people.

I suppose the question is where are you putting the network key. Are you setting it into the router first are are you putting in the wifi connection in your operating system and assuming that is all you need to do, sorry if this is treating you as stupid. Also what type of network key are you setting WEP, WPA, WPA2? And also do both you router and network care support the type of key you are choosing to use. And finally have you turned on access lists in the router by mistake.
The sequence of what you should need to do to turn on network keys, and you should use network keys, is
1 Make sure everything works without network keys set.
2 Log in to the router and under the Security setup of your router turn on the newest type of key that both devices support, which on my router is WPA2-PSK. If one doesn't support as high as the other then drop back the higher key to a less secure setting until both support the setting, and think about upgrading.
3 Put a complicated pass phrase in the location on the router that asks for a pass phrase. Ideally don't use words that can be found in the dictionary, don't use anything to do with you ie name, street name, Shop name, car number plate or anything else that someone might be able to guess. The more random the phrase the better. This site produces very good very random passwords. Save the settings are reboot the router.
4 Click on your network connection, find the broadcast name of your router and when it asks for a pass phrase put in the phrase from the previous step.
5 If it all works ok then make a note somewhere safe of the pass phrase you used.
6 Reboot your pc and make sure it all still works ok. If it does then you are done.

I wouldn't worry about turning off your BSSID on your router as it makes no difference to your routers security. My operating system automatically shows up the routers with their BSSID turned off as a blank line and i am not even running any software that looks for them. So i my opinion turning of your BSSID at best gives you a false sense of security. What i would recommend that you do is change it from whatever it is by default set to as if you have a Router supplied as part of a package then the user name a password will be a standard for all routers supplied by the company and usually the BSSID has the company name as part of it. Which would make it easier to know where to start trying to break into the Router. And again don't set it to anything that has any obvious link to you like for example your house number and street name or your surname or company name etc. For this reason it would be a good idea to change the Admin login name if possible and definately change the admin login password. Keep this information somewhere safe as well.
