as above can you change the bt infinity hub for a normal router? reason being is wireless my lappy only downloads at about 20meg but if i take it upstairs and wire it, it downloads at 38meg. I've tried changing the channel to 9 to see if it helps but its still the same?

well sometimes isps lock down the routers so you can only use it with their service, feel free to try it with yours.
the username/password should have been on a letter or email given to you by bt,

if you go into the online set up of your router (192.168.0.1 ? on internet browser) and log in (typically username admin password - password) you can get your login details to access internet etc from there.

I believe the BT infinity setup uses a separate modem and router.
I suspect the modem is specialist, as whilst the connection to your house is vDSL, (between house and DSLAM in Green Cab), I suspect it would work to different specifications to standard aDSL.

The router, is a router. - You can change it if you want, as the modem has an output of RJ45 standard network plug. They use the BT homehub for the purpose of the router, which is actually not a bad router, although you can of course get a much better router if it doesnt serve its purpose.
