What is the best program for converting to divx/xvid

As the title says what is the best program for converting avi/mp4 files to divx or xvid or even stay as avi. The problem I have is that I bought a new tv for bedroom bonus is it has a usb port. Problem is a lot of the avi files I have, are ac3 audio which tv does not play. Solution is to convert the files to any of the above formats but with mp3 as the audio.

All suggestions would be welcomed without the usual ~~~~ the tv out the window and buy a decent one

If you can access the original DVD then I'd use DVDx

Converting to DVD format I'd look at ConvertX, but not sure on audio formats (it's been a while since I've played with it)

I've not yet looked into anything else yet. Might have to as I have Senna as an Avi, but ConvertX doesn't like it, keeps dropping thousands of frames when converting.

All the dvd's are damaged only have access to the avi files. I have a couple of programs but they take forever and the compression isn't great if I convert a 2gb avi file with exactly the same settings as original with the exception of using mp3 instead of ac3 for audio it comes out as nearly 5gb, think I'll have a search tonight

Pissed me right off it did. Got a special version on a download... bloody Nero Vision won't work due to on-live activation check of the code.

Still use it for burning though.

Thanks smirnoff I found it earlier and am about three quarters the way through hp deathly hallows 1 it was one of my problem files, being a blueray rip to begin with it had ac3 audio. It looks as though it's going to take about 1h45 to convert 2 gig. I'll report back with how it turns out

I've already got newsgroups mate but as I said tv in bedroom has usb port that can play divx avi mpeg all that bollox but it can't play the ac-3 audio codec which seems to be the prefered codec on rips nowadays to give 5.1 sound so I needed something convert the audio and I use convertx 4 when I need to put them onto dvd. Thanks for the advice and links anyway.

avs video convertor has done the trick pretty well. All looks in sync and video is about the same file size has dropped by 300mb. It looks like a pretty reasonable ripper/convertor, it will rip dvd and blueray and convert to just about every format going including H.264 and DPG (nintendo ds)
