How do i Convert 72 dpi to 300 dpi

my pc appears to automatically upload files from my digital camera in 72 dpi. i didn't realise this was a problem until i wanted to get something printed and the printer is looking for 300 dpi.

how do i convert 72 dpi images to 300 dpi. i don't have photoshop, is there any other way to do it?

the images are still on my digital camera as well as on the pc if that helps in any way, and i'm running windows 7

In Your camera settings menu , You need to select a higher resolution setting with more pixels... good , better , best ect.

The above will help for future photos , for existing ones give this website and utilities a try :

GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program: The Free and Open Source Image Editor

there is no need to convert images to 72 dpi or 300 dpi or whatever you want dpi.

dpi stands for dots per inch and measures print (display) density. which means, that you original picture has resolution, which could be transferred to imaging device with some dpi. The only thing which matters is resolution, physical size of image.

for example, if you have 300?300 pixels image and wish to print it, than in most occasions and on most printers this resolution will be enough to print 1 inch (2.54 cm). if you wish to see this image on the screen with 72 dpi, and size of one screen pixel (dot) is 0.28mm, than you'll see picture about 10?10 cm.
