    virgin media contract?

Every so often i get a bit restless around the witching hour i get up try to connect on line to maybe do a bit of gaming or have a look around the various players that are available. BUT! my connection either disconnects or is cut off before i even use it. Is this a breach of contract? if not what is? this is pissing me off. you can bet that from around midnight on this is gonna happen. I doesn't slow just disconnects. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR REPLIES. HAPPY NEW YEAR TA YE ALLLLL

and im not sure what your saying but its gone down like twice in 10 years, it never "stops" or freezes........it just works all the time, without any problems?

doesnt even run slowly, its about as perfect as you can get anytime of the day?

are you a heavy user normally ? ie dl lots of large files etc ? i ask this because im sure i have read on here before that they throttle your connection if you are a heavy user, maybe someone else will shed some more light on this for you

not this house, i have lost count of the number of times that i have had to disconnect and reconnect the mains electricity then wait about 5 mins for service to resume only to go through it all again about 5 mins later. Its driving me up the walls.

Then when you have unlimited broad band, its only unlimited so long as you don't go over a limit? This must be why sky say they won't slow or disconnect your bb at anytime of the day. cuz virgin do.

from this description it sounds more like a faulty modem or router than your connection clem.

have you run a diagnostics check for your speed etc ? as above could be a faulty modem, call them up and they do a ping test etc
you can do this yourself, but im not sure how, have seen a thread on here, might be better to post this in the network section, probably get more response from more with knowledge on the subject, just to add no bb is unlimited, also at certain times of the day when loads of other users are online your speeds will vary a lot

I had the same problem last week. my internet would work for 10 mins then disconnect and it was always in the evening. they sent me a new modem router and everything has been fine since just give them a call on a virgin phone '150' and they will test to see if its at your end of theirs

Did the ping test, nearly 20 meg sometimes over it. ring them but they say there's no problem from their end and i have asked for replacement modem they refuse. my only alternative is to tell them to f### ##f n get a new provider

Been on virgin (telewest) for approx 12 years and only on a very rare occasion do i have to reset modem and router, probably once or twice a year. Switch both off, switch modem on, wait til all lights have flashed, approx 20 secs, then switch router on.

I know virgin do or did, not sure if still do, half your connection for 2 hours if you d/l more than 5gig, more than happy to put up with this as i never d/l that much in one go. It is a good service and whenever i do speed test i always get slightly more than what i pay for, which is btter than any adsl as they quote upto 16meg but only ever give approx 4meg.

I did have 50meg BB but backed off to 30meg as dont really see alot of difference and a few seconds more to d/l something doesnt hurt.

Check the modem logs. If its disconnecting then there must be a reason for it and there's a good chance the log file will be capturing the events.

Depending on your modem, you may find the logs at -

If not, then just log onto the modem webpage and follow the menu's

If you see lots of 'T' errors or DHCP refusals then you have a problem.

Also, whilst you in the modem, check the signal levels. Downstream should be close to 0dBmv (+/-5dBmv are acceptable). Upstream should be less than 55dBmv with somewhere around 45-50dBmv being more common.

As of to-day my XBOX is continually disconnecting, can't even access LAST.FM . My young lad said i'm barely getting anything can't remember what it was he said but as m9g above said , i'm getting over and above 20mg. As it is my downloads are usually below 1gb the odd time its a bout 7 gb of a download. But since i've been on ere crying about it i haven't been downloading anything, yet this problem is persisting. Usually i have this trouble around 11.30pm through out the night, which in its self is out of order. At these times i can't even access iplayers. Thinking of telling them to take their stuff out.

                              NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO dont do that!!!!!

I went to sky once, had it installed, three days later told them to take it back out and stayed with virgin, your broadband will be worst, guarenteed as it's through ADSL (phone line) where at the moment your cable which is loads faster. These ADSL companies quote UPTO 16meg but realistically you'll get approx 4meg. Also Sky's HD is only 720 where Virgin is full 1080.

Believe me you WILL regret it.

Goto http://speedtest.net/ a recognised BB speed test site and run the test a few times to different servers to get a rough average, I pay for 30meg and I always get around the 30meg give or take a meg. This is what I believe you should be getting as virgin dont do 20meg any more as they gave a free upgrade to 30meg.

You need to get to the root cause of the problem, we're not all getting the problem so it's not a wide scale problem but more localized to you. Just get onto Virgin and tell them they need to sort it and get an engineer onto it. They will sort it.

                              Regards
