Are the days of tower / desktop PCs numbered ?

I haven't used my desktop PC for months now. Everything I want to do I can do on my laptop e.g. video / photo editing.

Do other users think that the large desktop or tower computers have come to the end ?

some jobs a laptop wont be good enough, gaming and a 5-1 sound system on pc and big screen better than a laptop.2 months ago i was looking for a pc desk unit and not as popular as they once were as everybody now buys laptops.

Am old fashioned and like a box at ma feet, i like the mega powerful performance of a desktop, a always find lappys and portables good if your using them as a portable but a couldn't use them full time.
If something fails in a desktop its easy to diagnose and repair and prices of parts are coming down mostly..

The market is more commercial driven for the masses and the masses want portables and app stores.
The desktop will always have a place but it will be in lower numbers aimed at power users.

The problem is the way lappys are marketed, some owners treat them as a main pc and then wonder why after 12-18 months later the graphics card has melted..
A must repair about 6 lappys a week and some are in a hell of a state.

Windows are doing a great job of possibly killing their main cash cow of the OS and office products with Windows 8.
8 is a "one size fits all OS", that will piss of desktop users as its geared up for touch with the Metro interface that looks like Windows 1 having a car crash with MS Bob.
Desktop users wont switch from 7 to 8, business will completely ignore it as they just started moving away from XP and see 7 as a new OS that will last for many years and doesn't have a stupid interface designed for kids.

The only people helping desktops decline is MS who should have made 8 enhanced for desktop programs and business use..
They should have built a seperate OS for tablets with its own app store and spare it from years of legacy programs that will be shit on a tablet..
Tablet users don't want heavy Windows programs and desktop users dont want app stores..
Its hard to believe how dumb MS or Ballmer can be, there killing their core users..

I prefer the desk top and the mouse (wired or wireless)
Missus has a laptop and I hate having to rectify something on it for her.

and a desktop may have an rs232 port or can be easily added if needed,as they are not needed on lappy now.

never im on a lap top now but id rather be at a desk with a mouse than this pile of 5hite they are handy because you can take them out but they are flawed with battery life and limits

you will be saying coal fires and milk men will be a thing of the past soon

                  your damn crazy

Definitely prefer a desktop, you can custom build and upgrade easily.

My wife mostly uses the lappy. I only use it when flashing phones and such as the power here is very unreliable, or watching movies through the TV.

As an IT guy I have a second desktop for backups, testing, and general screwing around.

He he he, the second desktop is an essential mate, mines has been stripped more times than Jordan with an equal amount of things put inside it.

I have 2 laptops, hardly use them. There aren't may laptops out there that take 16gb RAM and none I know of that have multiple processors (don't confuse that with cores), that can take any peripheral (PCI type card or nnot) that I can throw in a desktop. Until they do, not a chance. Not forgetting I can throw a slack handful of hard disks in my desktop when I need more space.
