i hate to burst the bubble folks,as i agree with everything being done, all the help is great,dk community sticking up for others, but by author saying dont want to let police do the job and do it themselves,by telling others what they are doing if anything happens at their end,ie breaks the law in any way, becomes a conspiracy and everyone involved will be part of that conspiracy that is giving tips or help.so in theory everyone mentioned in this thread would be part of that conspiracy, and if any crime is commited, the police will use this thread for evidence, and possibly charge people involved or use them for witnesses.i am only saying be very careful in what you say...

If its on a cable network, the IP would change if they changed the MAC add of the router. Turing it off wont change the IP.

Not sure how it works on adsl.

But I know on cable it wont change randomly or when you reboot.

Only if a New router or basically when a new mac is added manually etc.

Unless it has specific tracking software its a hit and a miss.

Once thing I always do is use prog such as logmein and have a guest account open to login, config the guest so that it cant do nout but browse and be on line.

This way they will always login and you can track it that way.

Just a basic way to do it

There are no reasons not to go to the police that are valid.

My thoughts are that maybe they are stolen to begin with, that is a reason for not wanting the police to be involved.

Mjolinor, the reason for not going to the police as yet is that some people do things old skool Not cos the gear was stolen to begin with!

Example: your house was broken into and they stole things you cant replace and are lets say centimental to you. (im assuming its never happend to you or if it has you have been happy about it?)
when the Police or shall i say if the police do catch them! the chances are they will be arrested and then released again to appear infront of a magistrate for a slap on the wrist and you have been a naughty boy/girl and off you go!

Do u REALLY think they wouldnt go and do it again?
Drug users do to feed their habbit! and this could well have been the case!

So before you pass judgement think sunshine! the LAW aint always on your side!

Its not illegal to track an ip address but what your asking to do it for is. Your asking people to trace an ip adress so you can go and beat the shite outta someone. I wont tell you how to do it as the reasons are wrong.

What you should do is give the ip address to the police and let them do thier job.

What happens if you get the address and things get really out of order? People do time ect. Hospitalised. Then they come lookin for u and ur mates? Are you forgetting that if its them who still have the laptop (they could have.sold it on) they will know where it came from

I did not pass judgment I merely stated that you are wrong not to go to the police and that is a fact.

The ip address belongs to bskyb and AFAIK they dont offer static IPs so it will almost certainly change when the router reboots.
