So a had another go at Windows 8 this weekend just to see if it was as bad as the first time a tried it, that lasted for about an hour before a lost the will to live.
A was trying it on my desktop and on desktops Windows 8 is a helluva mess and offers no reason to bother upgrading!
On a tablet am pretty sure Windows 8 will do ok but a don't use tablets so am judging it on a desktop..
MS are making big noises at how light 8 is compared to 7, this makes no difference to someone like me with 4 cores 8 gb ram and plenty under the bonnet to power 7..
I admit i only upgrade when MS build a OS that's worth upgrading to, 7 was worth it as XP was getting on a bit and a couldn't stand Vista.
But if people found Vista a learning curve then 8 will confuse the living hell out of them.

Don't be fooled, even the advanced users are pretty pi**** off.

We all know the pattern by now from MS, they produce a complete dog that requires 2/3 service packs to fix, make a few visual changes and tweaks and then produce another OS that's good, Vista to 7 is a perfect example.
8 is something different though, its MS hitting the panic button and attempting to drag "all" its users onto a dumb down touch based OS which power users like me hate.
8 reminded me of that other MS attempt called Bob, a attempt by MS to build a OS with a social interface used by dummies..
A can't stand the Metro interface (Windows 1.0 anyone) ,its hopeless on a desktop but can you switch it off,,, nope, there was a crude hack that allowed you to do this but MS have patched that hack so you are forced to boot into Metro.
Why are MS forcing me to boot into Metro, why can't i have the option to switch it off, on Windows 7 a can switch off "all" tablet features in a few clicks, are MS becoming the new Apple and dictating what i can or can't do with the OS that ive paid for?
Then there is one of my biggest problems, no ~~~~ing start button, a mean wtf are they thinking at MS, the button thats powered Windows for a thousand years is gone.
Again there is a hack and again why are MS enforcing this change on power and Enterprise users..
Can you imagine businesses thoughts on Windows 8, they have spent a fortune dragging themselves away from XP, upgrading hardware and retraining staff, a doubt they will want to go through that crap again when 7 works fine and is supported to 2020.
8 is supposed to be the simplest OS that MS have produced, yet the simplest things baffled me at first, it took me 5 min to work out how to leave the log in screen and get into the desktop, silly me, a should have known to move the cursor to the bottom of the screen, left click and drag the screen to the top.
If you are a tablet user am sure you will be laughing at that but for a desktop user this is pretty much alien.
Here is one for you, if you try 8 lets see how long it takes you to figure out how to shut your bloody computer down?
These are the simplest tasks yet 8 make them painful to do..
Some say that 8 is just 7 with touch components bolted onto it but its more than that, they have crudely morphed them together and it hardly feels integrated, its kludgy and crude and frankly an insult to desktop users.
MS have taken the "look for the settings game" to a whole new level, for years we have been tearing our eyeballs out trying to setup our pc's to work the way we want and dealing with stupid name changes like system restore to system protection etc, using 8 i literally threw my keyboard to the ground in anger screaming, "why is this OS such a miserable piece of sh**).
Once again you need to hack your way through that GUI mess to get anything done..
Try using the Metro search bar for "printers" , nothing comes up, you need to goto the control panel and search in desktop mode to find one of the most common used components..
You are constantly jumping between interfaces to find the settings you want..
A could go on and on but you are probably exhausted now but the one thing that still pops into my head is, why didn't MS just build a tablet OS for tablet devices and a new desktop version for desktops?
Instead we have a "one size fits all OS" that has the same code base as desktop and mobile and imo compromises both.
MS have failed to understand why the iPad took off, it had a proper touch OS that was simple and light and not dragging tons of legacy crap with it..
Like a said, on a desktop 8 sucks big ass but on a tablet am sure it will work fine.

Well, almost fine.
