need help getting online with windows xp

my computer had a problem recently corrupt or missing file so i got a local repairer to come and fix it last week,he backed up my photo's and re-installed windows xp professional and left me with a disk in case i needed to take computer back to scratch, this morning the original problem returned so i've started the system from scratch again but i'm stuck at setting up a network connection, when i was setting things up i got this message AN INTERNET CONNECTION COULD NOT BE CHOSEN.windows was unable to determine which network connection to use for internet access.your computer may be connected to a network but windows cannot finish setting up the network at this time.you can select one of the available network connections later, after you finish setting up windows just click control panel on the start menu, open network and connections and then click set up or change your home or small office network, but this is where i'm stuck when i click on set up it has several boxes for set up but it looks like its for a dial up connection but at the bottom it also has a box for lan connection and i dont know what i should be doing at this point i'm on broadband with virgin and have a router set up for my laptop and i know when i use the laptop it comes up with connections available but nothing like that is appearing on the computer,i've been in touch with the repairer and he told me not to bother and just click on the internet explorer icon in the start menu but that didnt work (no connection) does anyone know where i've gone wrong?

Make sure the lan driver is installed in the driver devices.

Right click my computer and go to properties. Go into devices and look for the lan. Any yellow exclamation marks means something isnt installed properly. You will have to download the correct driver for the lan adapter. Or if you hyave the motherboard disc you can use that for the drivers.

If you have a virgin router plug your pc in directly using an ethernet lead. You should go online in a few seconds. As stated above check you have ethernet drivers installed in device manager.

i'm just looking at the system properties and in hardware it has device manager with driver signing and device manager options but i dont know if its the right menu or not.
when i started the re-setting of the system i left all wires and cables connected except the scanner, the router is not supplied by virgin its just one i bought at the same time as my laptop.

can go online now but cant download

i decided to unplug all leads and cables and put them back in and try again and it worked i have internet explorer,i've been trying to download an anti-virus from download.com but as soon as i go to the site a large internet explorer box appears with the following- yellow triangle! problems with this webpage might prevent it from being displayed properly or functioning properly,in future you can display this message by double clicking the warning icon. it has a data box below which currently shows line 62,char320, error expected, code 0. i've still got to the anti-virus page for avast and avg and clicked on the download and tried open and save but after both downloads a message box says they failed ENTRY POINT NOT FOUND the procedure entry point encodepointer could not be locted in the dynamic link library KERNEL 32.dll . i remember on the original problem before the re-set it said something about KERNEL32,i rang the repairer last night on his mobile but he never answered once, can anyone help me?

i was thinking of re-installing the disc as the repairer has let me down again and now his mobile number has changed, when i had the original problem the corrupt/missing file was on screen and all i did was put in the disk and let it run but i was wondering if the computer might have a factory re-set and would this get rid of the fault?

it mite get ride of the fault
like i said pop the disc in go to instal a new windows and then click the repair button

                  for factory reset
on the boot-up of ur computer u need to press the pause/break button to pause the loading process and look at the bottom of ur start-up and try and find the F key option for restore/factory reset

if u have 1 that is

if all that fails u have the disc and the serial key so u can always do a fresh install

got the disc in now i think i clicked on upgrade as i couldnt find install a new windows option or repair so its loading windows again now, approx 45 mins to go.

put the disc in and get to the point were ur going to install a new windows
Press Enter to setup Windows XP now.
The next screen that appears is the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen. Read through the agreement and press F8 to confirm that you agree with the terms.
On the next screen, Windows XP Setup needs to know which Windows installation you want to either repair or install a fresh copy over.
                        Press r do the repair
then just wait for installation option prompts and then that should fix all windows problems

this link will show u a step by step guide if u get lost

                            factory reset or clean install

make sure u have saved everything before doing this tho

                            jus readin ur orignal post
do u have a disc for the router? if not let me know the make & model of router n i will go hunt drivers for u

                            would u try windows 7?

also just sprung to mind is sometimes the onboard network device dies so if u have a spare network card bung it in n test
                            this might solve the problem

i didnt realise the new reply and i've just asked about factory re-set in the pc problems section,i do have the disk for the belkin router but i've not been needing it as its been getting straight back online so it must be detecting it, when i called in the repairer he had said that he would install windows 7 for me but for some reason he went with xp maybe because of the age of the computer?
as for network card i have no idea what you mean but i'm pretty sure i dont have one.
