    Need a spare router like a D-link DIR655

I run a D-link DIR655 router, and just to be on the safe side I need a back up.
Can anyone suggest a router that's either got the same performance or better than a DIR655 to be used on Vermin Media 60Mb ??

Usually plenty of ex-vm cheap dir615's on ebay. These are pretty good if you flash them to DD-WRT. Just make sure you know the version for sale (generally, you want a 'D4' version but check the dd-wrt site for others that will work)

what's the comparison like between the 2 routers though ?? I am led to believe that the DIR655 was best in its class when released a few years ago ... what's the 615's like ??

I have a vermin Superhub here, but its sh#t and I have it in Modem mode and use my own router. I thought most people did that.

I suppose its going to depend on what you want the thing for !

The 655 is a gigabit router so all its wired ports are compatible with gigabit ethernet cards. The 615 is a 100Mbit/sec router for wired connections. So if your wanting a router for purely wired connections the the 655 is arguably superior

For wireless both routers are wireless-N, so offer connections of upto 300Mbit/sec. You'll be lucky to get more than 54Mbit/sec in any real-world usage from either though.

The advantage of the 615 is that you can flash the very much superior dd-wrt firmware (or even build your own openwrt firmware if your so inclined).

So again, it really depends on what you want this new router to actually do.

Ahh Right ... I do have a lot of wired connections, as my current DIR655 has a 8 way switch connected to it I recon It would be best to keep with another DIR655 then ?

if there is a fault with the device or any external part of the device
do like gazz10 mentioned contact virgin they should sort it

if this is about altering any products provided by virgin media involving firmware
i cannot assist in that manner because their touchy with their t+c and their gear

                on any other note

your net internet running nice and fast?
                getting the right speed?

Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test
secure? Optimize your PC? your Browsers?

then why do you need another router might i ask? if your router does have
the 300mbps transfer rate with gigabit connections? do you use a lot of devices?.

The top two for networking are Cisco and Belkin btw

in 2010 the transfer rate was 300mbps
                now the speeds are different
                examples given
now wireless N is pushing 450mbps

                and
power line is pushing 500mbps (if anyone needs a direct connection to devices)

Info on how to set your set your super hub to modem mode
and for reference that wireless drop issue was a common problem i hear
How do I set up Modem Mode on my Super Hub?

Thanks for the advice ... but all i want is a spare router that i can use to replace my own DIR655 when it eventually goes T#ts up. The last thing i want to do is go rushing down PC world and pay top dollar for a router, when i have one here ready to go. If you lived in my house you would realise how much everyones lives depended on the internet...
