There is an app for iOS called AirPlayer which allows you to stream from a DLNA NAS device (I've got a TwonkyMedia server) got it on both the iPhone and iPad.

Quality is dependent on source file format - DiVX using the FFMpeg plug in is a bit jerky, whereas the native Quicktime for H264 formats works really well.

If most of your files are DivX, then I would probably recommend an Android - the wives Nexus 7 can stream both file formats smoothly using VPlayer with the DLNA plugin - VPlayer is free from Play store, and the plugin can be downloaded within the app.
